Framework Overview

The FinOps Framework offers a blueprint for establishing and thriving in FinOps practices. Just like FinOps itself, this framework evolves through insights drawn from community experiences, contributions, and discussions. It is a collaborative endeavor crafted by and for the community.
How to Contribute?
Updates to the open-source FinOps Framework, including definitions, guidance, and information, are informed by the cumulative expertise of FinOps practitioners. These enhancements stem from outputs generated by Working Groups, contributions from Special Interest Groups, community dialogues, and other sources.
What are the procedures for contributing changes to the FinOps Framework?
If you notice anything that requires updating, enhancement, or removal, your input is valuable to us. This project is community-driven, and your voice counts. You can submit changes through various channels:
  1. Use the “Make Suggestion” button located in the top-right corner of Framework pages to propose updates or report errors.
  2. Engage with members and the team via the #framework slack channel.
How is the review process conducted?

Changes made to each section of this site undergo review either during team meetings or meetings with the Technical Advisory Council. During these sessions, commits and Pull Requests are examined and voted on for merging.

The team employs automation tools to rebuild the site several times a week, ensuring that the latest changes are captured or minor updates are made to maintain the site.
How are review cycles and timings managed?
The operational members oversee organizational aspects, while technical components require review and voting by a broader community group. These review meetings are scheduled at various times throughout the month, impacting the timeliness of commit and change evaluations.
Issues and minor changes such as link corrections and typo fixes may be addressed promptly, as they typically don’t necessitate extensive code review, voting, or approval.

#1  FinOps Domain

FinOps Domains denote areas of activity or expertise. Every organization embracing FinOps will engage in activities across all FinOps Domains. Each FinOps Domain comprises FinOps Capabilities, which delineate the functional activities pertinent to that Domain.

#2  FinOps Capabilities

FinOps Capabilities embody operational aspects that align with their respective FinOps Domains. These include tasks and processes facilitating the fulfillment of FinOps practice requirements across FinOps Phases. Such activities and processes aim to facilitate enabling, education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, actionable tasks, attainment of business objectives, and enhancement of FinOps maturity.

#3  FinOps Maturity Model

The FinOps Maturity Model designations aim to pinpoint practitioners’ current operational positions across diverse concepts without passing judgment, empowering them to explore potential investment opportunities. Additionally, they serve as benchmarks to gauge practitioners’ performance as they develop their practices.

#4  FinOps Personas

Collaborating with the FinOps Personas within your organization is essential for implementing the FinOps Framework. All involved personas stand to gain from grasping the Framework’s operational model. Operating within this framework involves forging alliances during periods of change, establishing a shared lexicon, devising strategies to empower, and creating communication initiatives.

#5  FinOps Phases

The FinOps Phases consist of Inform, Optimize, and Operate. The Inform phase offers visibility to foster shared accountability. In the Optimize phase, efficiency opportunities are identified and their value determined. The Operate phase establishes and enacts processes aligned with the objectives of technology, finance, and business.

#6  FinOps Principles

The FinOps Principles serve as a guiding beacon steering our FinOps practice. They are crafted by members of the FinOps Foundation and refined through practical experience. Initially proposed alongside the release of the Cloud FinOps book in September 2019, as a collaborative effort with AWS, these principles now extend across various cloud platforms. Given the dynamic nature of cloud services, subject to quarterly updates, these principles may undergo slight modifications over time as collective experience grows.
